Design Manager
Job Title: Design Manager
Role Purpose
The Design Manager is a key member of the Design Management team.
You will assist the Head of Design Management and the relevant Business Unit General Manager to ensure:
Design compliance
Quality standards
Successful delivery of a portfolio of design projects
Additional responsibilities include:
Promoting Omexom within the industry to support business development and employee engagement
Setting a high standard for stakeholder management across the project team
Ensuring the design teams uphold stakeholder management best practices
Demonstrating commercial and financial awareness to manage project scope changes efficiently
Encouraging engineering innovation and value engineering with a focus on sustainability
Other key tasks:
Supporting the technical design team in developing and reviewing Processes and Procedures, ensuring adherence during scheme development
Assessing the impact of one project’s design on concurrent projects, and supporting resource allocation
Understanding NEC and other relevant contract types
Managing the design programme, design scope deliverables, and reporting progress or delays accurately
Acting as custodian of design change, managing change registers, EWNs, nCEs, and PMIs per contractual provisions
Collaborating with commercial managers, quantity surveyors, project managers, and internal designers to manage project communications
Managing and registering Technical Queries (TQs) and Requests for Information (RFIs)
Liaising with the Principal Designer regarding communications for permanent and temporary works
Promoting a proactive team culture and sharing lessons learned and best practices
Responsibilities & Duties
Including but not limited to:
Lead and manage the overall design programme, ensuring timely and accurate reporting
Produce design programmes with input from design teams and OEMs, meeting client deliverables
Coordinate tender estimates and technical responses
Ensure timely, on-budget delivery of project design scopes in line with customer requirements, quality, safety, and CDM 2015 regulations
Promote ‘smarter working’ practices
Encourage a culture of safety, health, and environmental awareness
Drive innovation and collaboration within the design team
Manage technical and scope changes across projects
Compile monthly project reports
Seek opportunities to deliver safer, faster, and more profitable outcomes
Maintain key project documentation
Ensure compliance with Omexom’s governance and customer requirements
Review method statements/risk assessments to ensure design compliance
Ensure Energy Transmission projects comply with client specifications and supplier requirements

Person Specification
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
8+ years in a related role
Relevant qualifications (Construction Management, Engineering, Project Management, etc.)
Proven ability to deliver design projects
High attention to detail
Strong belief in team development
Experience in design delivery and design management
Proven track record of safe, timely, and high-quality program delivery
Experience interfacing with internal and external stakeholders
Solid technical foundation and engineering experience
Experience managing projects ranging from standard to complex
Proven leadership in managing multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams
Degree qualified in Engineering, Project Management, or related discipline
Desired:
Experience in energy transmission and distribution projects
Background in UK Energy or highly regulated industries
Membership in a relevant professional institution
Competencies
Required skills, knowledge, and abilities:
Strong knowledge of SSEN and National Grid design management/approvals processes
Excellent management and organisational skills
Understanding of information management (incl. ISO19650 – BIM)
Knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations, especially Principal Designer requirements
Awareness of roles such as LCDAE and CDAE for National Grid projects
Experience with National Grid design assurance and Type Approval
Ability to meet commercial targets and work under pressure
High proficiency in Microsoft Office
Strong customer focus
