Senior Design Manager

As part of our recent successful diversification strategy, we are now seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager to join our high performing pre-contracts team in our Sydney office 

Working alongside leading industry experts, this role will maximise opportunities for Seymour Whyte through effective design management during submission preparation and project delivery as well as the identification, selection, procurement and management of designers.

Providing mentoring to Project Design Managers and leading the Pre-Contracts design team, the successful applicant will also manage corporate design relationships and ensure designs meet all project requirements.

Ideally, we are looking for applications from people who have experience in transport, energy and water projects.

About the role:

  • Prepares, maintains and drives a design program, procurement and management of designers including consultants.
  • Develops and manages the design review/ approval process to include designer, constructor and client input.
  • Ensures best practice in design management in collaboration with Project Managers, including time and cost management, and design.
  • Delivers and leads design teams and Design Managers to deliver innovative and efficient tender solutions for design and construct contracts and offer alternatives for construct-only contracts.
  • Build competency of project teams in constructability inputs and reviews.
  • Develops design deliverables for bid management plans.
  • Collaborates with Project Managers to ensure compliance with design management processes.
  • Provides advice and feedback on tenders and detailed designs to Estimators, Construction personnel and Planners.
  • Facilitates the critical review of design packages.
  • Understand the purpose of the design brief, be able to proficiently interpret it and ensure its requirements are met by the design deliverables.
  • Prepare maintain and drive a design program, procurement and management of all design consultants.
  • Reviews consultant’s budgets and contracts and monitors and reports changes to remain within budget.
  • Ensures compliance with Design Management Plans and relevant Planning Approvals and Statutory Authorities requirements, liaises with authorities as required.
  • Leads adherence to the value-add approach to Quality Assurance in all work practices and coordination of activities between design and construction teams.

The successful applicant will have the following skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil), Degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent Civil Engineering qualification.
  • Registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer status (CPEng) advantageous.
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience, preferably on design and construct civil infrastructure projects for State or Federal government clients.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills and/or knowledge related to civil and structural design processes, demonstrating the ability to participate in conversations with the technical experts.
  • Demonstrated experience managing design processes during tender and/or project delivery phase.
  • Knowledge of the estimation process to enable value-add contributions to tenders, EOI’s, etc.
  • Superior communication, relationship management, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior practical construction site experience essential.
  • Demonstrated experience managing design processes during tender and/or project delivery phase.
  • Previous history of working on a range of Civil Infrastructure projects preferred.
  • Prior experience managing small teams including subcontractors/ consultants.
