Project Manager (Defence)

6/4/2025

About Seymour Whyte:

For over 30 years, Seymour Whyte has been a leading civil contracting business in Australia. We combine the agility and personal connection of a Tier 2 contractor with the expertise of a Tier 1 company. Now, with the enhanced resources of VINCI, one of the largest and most prestigious construction companies in the world, we offer our employees and clients the best of three worlds.

About the role:

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager with Defence expertise to lead major infrastructure projects across Australia, including regional locations.

This role is ideal for a skilled and qualified professional with a strong background in Defence-related building, civil, and marine projects.

You will have the chance to manage high-value projects over $200M, overseeing the entire project lifecycle, from initial planning through to completion - whilst exploring and experiencing diverse locations across Australia.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead all phases of Defence projects, from initial planning and tendering (ITR/RFT) through to project handover. Develop and manage construction plans, ensuring projects are on schedule, meet quality standards, and align with Defence objectives.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of Defence contracting models, including Construct Only, Design & Construct (D&C), Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), and Managing Contractor. Ensure compliance with Defence CFI Contracting Suite standards while maintaining project integrity and performance across building, civil and marine projects.
  • Build strategic relationships with Defence PMCAs, DSC, and other key stakeholders to secure project alignment and communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Oversee design management and pre-construction activities, coordinating with consultants to ensure project plans meet operational and construction requirements, facilitating smooth mobilisation and progress.
  • Develop project budgets, manage costs, and address risks proactively. Formulate major contractual claims, monitor financial performance, and adjust as needed to achieve financial and operational targets.

The successful applicant will have the following skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering.
  • Proven background managing Defence construction projects in Australia, with expertise in Defence contracting, project planning, and budget management for high-value projects (> $200M).
  • Australian Citizenship with eligibility for Baseline Security Clearance (AGSVA). Seymour Whyte maintains sponsorship.
  • Strong stakeholder management, contract management, and experience in the pre-contract and post-win phases.
  • Ability to work on-site across regional Australia, including locations throughout QLD, NT and WA.

We have a range of additional benefits available for our employees:

  • Health & Wellbeing – discounted health insurance, seasonal vaccinations, wellness discounts, fertility benefit and employee assistance program (EAP).
  • Time for life / Work life balance – birthday leave, purchased leave program, paid parental leave and flexible work arrangements.
  • Financial wellbeing – competitive remuneration, annual performance bonuses, salary continuance insurance and employee share program.
  • Career development – training, mentoring programs, and leadership development program.

Many of our projects are located in regional areas, therefore all applicants must hold a current Driver’s Licence and have their own transport.

Seymour Whyte is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and we encourage applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, including veterans. Our commitment to an equitable construction industry extends to an inclusive culture that embraces our differences and gives everyone the opportunity to grow and be equally valued. We're unified in our direction toward having a workplace that is balanced and fair for all.

Next steps:

  • Submit your CV online to apply for this role.
  • All successful applicants will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical and criminal history check.
  • Applications will only be accepted from candidates who have the right to work in Australia.
