The role holder shall support the Lead Engineer and Project Engineer in the planning, coordination and delivery of engineering activities associated with the delivery of the ILW Buffer Storage Facility. The role will act as the day-to-day engineering focal point for the project, coordinating technical activities, managing interfaces between stakeholders and ensuring engineering deliverables are developed in accordance with project requirements, applicable legislation and engineering good practice.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Support the Lead Engineer and Project Engineer in delivering the ILW Buffer Storage project through concept, preliminary and detailed design phases.
  • Coordinate engineering activities across multiple disciplines, ensuring timely delivery of technical outputs.
  • Manage day-to-day technical interfaces between engineering teams, project management, waste management, safety case, operations and facility owners.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project requirements, design documentation and technical specifications.
  • Coordinate technical reviews and ensure design outputs are developed in accordance with project requirements.
  • Support the development of concept designs, optioneering studies and engineering assessments.
  • Coordinate engineering inputs required for project governance, readiness reviews and gate reviews.
  • Track engineering actions, assumptions, risks, opportunities and dependencies.
  • Support the development of project schedules and engineering delivery plans.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Engage with stakeholders including Building Services, Waste Management, Operations, Health Physics, Project Controls, Safety Case, Design Authority and external suppliers.
  • Review engineering deliverables and challenge technical solutions to ensure they remain practical, safe and deliverable.
  • Escalate significant technical, safety, programme or commercial issues to the Lead Engineer and Project Manager.

Qualifications

  • Degree (BSc, MSc or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Process Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or demonstrable progress towards professional registration.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering engineering projects within the nuclear, infrastructure, construction, energy or other highly regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with CDM Regulations 2015 and their application within engineering and construction projects.
  • Formal project management or engineering management qualification is desirable (APM, PRINCE2, PMI or equivalent).

Experience

  • Experience supporting the delivery of engineering projects through concept, preliminary and detailed design phases.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities and technical interfaces.
  • Experience acting as Project Engineer, Responsible Engineer, Design Engineer or similar engineering delivery role.
  • Experience managing engineering actions, technical risks, assumptions and dependencies.
  • Experience developing and reviewing engineering documentation, specifications, requirements and technical reports.
  • Experience coordinating external engineering organisations, consultants or contractors.
  • Experience supporting engineering design reviews and design assurance activities.
  • Experience supporting project governance, readiness reviews and stage gate reviews.
  • Experience interacting with operations personnel, engineering teams, project managers and technical specialists.
  • Experience working within nuclear, defence, infrastructure, energy or other highly regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting facility modifications, engineering design projects or new-build projects is desirable.
  • Experience supporting storage, handling, waste management or nuclear facility projects is desirable.
