Senior Software Engineering Careers in Industrial Automation

As a Senior Software Controls Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the full software & control systems development lifecycle — from requirements gathering and design through to commissioning, integration, and customer handover. You will collaborate closely with Project Managers, fellow Engineers, and customers to deliver robust, scalable, and future-proof automation solutions that meet demanding industry standards.

Key Responsibilities: Senior Controls Engineering

• Lead the design, development, and commissioning of industrial control systems, including PLC, SCADA, and HMI software.
• Analyse customer requirements, prepare functional design specifications, and develop detailed technical documentation.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members, driving continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing.
• Oversee factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT), ensuring reliable and efficient delivery of automation projects.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and liaise directly with customers to ensure timely project delivery and high-quality solutions.
• Engage in system integration, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis to resolve complex technical challenges.
• Ensure all software solutions comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and Actemium best practices.

What You Bring: Senior Automation Engineer Skills & Experience

• Proven experience in designing and delivering PLC/SCADA software for industrial automation projects (Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider or similar platforms).
• Excellent understanding of control philosophy, instrumentation, and systems integration.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
• Demonstrated leadership or mentoring experience within engineering teams.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines and with customers.
• HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent experience in engineering, software, or a related discipline.
• Previous experience delivering automation solutions in regulated sectors (e.g., water, energy, process industries) desirable but not essential.
