Job Title: Environmental Advisor
Reporting to: SHEQ Manager
Role Purpose
The Environmental Advisor will be responsible for overseeing all works in relation to environmental management on overhead line projects, liaising with NorPower project management personnel, site teams and sub-contractors and SHEQ personnel, ensuring the highest standards of environmental protection and management.
The jobholder will be working on site full time as part of an experienced construction team setting to work and coordinating overhead line teams to meet project timelines. They will be expected to travel to various site locations throughout the UK.
Responsibilities & Duties
Including but not limited to the following:
Support environmental and sustainability activities for projects and the business.
Collate environmental and sustainability data from across the businesses to meet our own and our clients’ requirements.
Assist the Environment and Sustainability Manager in liaising with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management and sustainability.
Provide support to operations and design teams on compliance and project specific mitigation measures including pollution control and environmental protection.
Assist with the production of internal and external reports as required, e.g. case studies, environmental & sustainability performance.
To undertake other related duties as appropriate as directed by the Line Manager.
Create and maintain a safe working environment, taking responsibility for the Health & Safety of yourself, colleagues and others, actively promoting the reporting of SAFEchecks to assist in continual improvement.
Lead by example and embed a positive culture, managing employees reporting to you to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, applicable regulations and codes of practice.
Cooperate with the Project Engineer and Project Manager to plan and monitor works, update site staff on planned works, report progress against agreed dates/targets.
Allocate and coordinate site resources including NorPower staff, sub-contractors, materials and equipment taking account of each person’s authority, training/experience and competence and ensuring they are aware of their responsibilities.
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out, at least daily, and that conditions and methods of work are safe.
Carry out setting to work briefings and ensure the working parties have access to relevant information and instructions, including applicable restrictions or limitations.
Ensure works are carried out in accordance with all relevant SHEQ drawings, schedules, processes and methods, and records are accurate and complete.
Responsibility for the safe operation and storage of plant, tools and equipment on site; ensure all equipment is checked, tests, inspections, and certifications are current, pre-use checks are carried out and deficiencies are reported and acted on.
Ensure incident and near miss reporting requirements are complied with and assist with investigations where appropriate.
Ensure trainees are supervised by a suitably experienced staff member and follow instruction. Use existing competence and experience to assist in continual development of all staff.
Person Specification
Educated to degree level in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability or equivalent.
Knowledge (and ideally some experience of) environmental legislation, ecological mitigation, sustainability practices.
Understanding of the construction operating environment.
Membership of Environmental Body i.e. IES, IEMA, CIEEM.

Qualifications and Experience
Minimum five years’ experience of working in the overhead line construction industry, with minimum three years’ holding a DNO authorisation/competency certificate.
Experience in all areas of construction and maintenance of OHL, including inspection, testing, certification and reporting procedures and related specifications, equipment, materials and tools.
Appropriate certificate in health and safety (e.g., Site Supervisor Safety Training).
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of environment management and sustainability issues including Water Environment, Ecology, Archaeology & Private Water Supplies.
Full UK drivers licence and flexibility to travel.
Ability and willingness to be flexible with working from home, office, and site based.
Be self-motivated.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Establish effective networks, both internally and externally.
A good knowledge and competence in using IT packages, including Microsoft Office, and prepared to learn new packages as required.
The ability to share knowledge and skills with colleagues.
Flexibility to be able to travel to work locations across the whole of the UK.
Full driving license.
Training, experience and certification appropriate to relevant machinery, plant and equipment, including lift planning.
Ability to ensure compliance with safety rules and documentation and be committed to working safely at all times.
Possess the ability to work in a time-pressured environment.
Have the ability to adapt to changing situations and environments.
Must have strong communication skills.
Must be an effective team worker with the ability to organize a work site.
Must represent NorPower by acting in a professional manner at all times.
Ecological & Environmental Tasks
Undertake a variety of field surveys for European protected species (badgers, otters, bats, water voles etc.).
Undertake Phase 1 and UK habitat surveys.
Undertake nesting bird checks and have an understanding of Schedule 1 birds.
Deliver training and toolbox talks to construction teams on ecological best practices.
Assist with obtaining and managing protected species licenses when required.
Monitor compliance of works.
Advise on peat management.
Advise on implementation of environmental mitigation.
Advise and undertake activities relating to water management and quality.
Advise on construction techniques.
Liaise with site management and construction teams regarding ongoing and upcoming works.
Advise on habitat enhancement, restoration and have an understanding of BNG.
Proficient use of Geographical Information System (GIS) software.
Review and comment on client works information.
Liaise with stakeholders and legislative bodies e.g. NatureScot.
Retain records of project environmental compliance.
Assist with the discharge of consent conditions.
Review RAMS and work permits.
Support compliance with NorPower/Omexom ISO14001 management system.
Qualifications
Full UK Driving Licence.
CSCS Card.
A degree in Ecology/Environmental Management.
Member of AECoW, CIEEM, IEMA or similar.
Personal ecological licence holder would be beneficial.
